North East Wake Backpack Buddies is grateful for the outpouring of support from our community in response to school closures as a result of the COVID-19 virus. Our mission to serve children and families facing food insecurity is even more important during this trying time.
Our weekend food distributions were doubled on Friday, March 13, to provide added support to our backpack buddy families in anticipation of school closures. While our program cannot continue in its usual form while schools remain closed this school year, North East Wake Backpack Buddies is partnering with area organizations to support efforts to distribute additional food to school children in our area.
Currently, when you donate to NEW Backpack Buddies, you are helping our organization to support efforts to feed local families, including:
● Supporting Wake County Public School System meal programs through donations to Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, The Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC and Overflowing Hands/Rocky Top Catering .
● Contributions of food and gift cards to the Northern Community Food Security Team, distributing items for weekend meals to 400+ children/week.
● Financial support to the Summer Nutrition Program of St. John’s Episcopal Church, which has been re-organized to serve the community during COVID19 and is distributing curbside meals several evenings a week at Hope House in Wake Forest.
● Our “Restock the Pantry” fund: The NEW Backpack Buddies pantries were donated to Tri-Area
Ministries and the Northern Community Food Security Team. When schools resume, NEW Backpack
Buddies will need a sizable amount of funds to completely restock our pantries and resume our
regularly weekly program.
